Initial exposure to the microbial environment surrounding the infant can have a significant impact on gut microbiota development.

External factors, such as maternal health status, mode of delivery, gestational age, and feeding regime, can impact the colonization and flux of microorganisms during this critical period in life.

Subsequently, multiple studies have begun to focus on how these factors can affect the gut microbiome in early life. Moreover, in order to improve the health status of the infant gut, current focus is on the effect of probiotics and prebiotics in terms of their potential multifaceted health benefits.
